I want to start by explaining "Dad of a Different Breed". The traditional Dad, meaning the ones we always saw on TV growing up, always had a plethora of knowledge, but was usually things like how to change a flat tire, what to say to girls, when to flip a burger, etc. While I think all of that is important, there is so much more out there. Those dads were great, but there are so many topics they didn't tackle. Some of it was taboo for the time, some was thought to be Mom's department, but I think we are beyond all that. Traditional parent roles have blended and I know I have taken on some things I never expected. At this point, I am a mix of Tim "the tool man" Taylor, Clark Griswold and Mrs. Doubtfire.
I grew up in a very DIY family. My dad was the tech guy and had us on computers and game systems young. My mom was very mechanical and taught us things like fixing bikes and home repairs. My grandfather had hot rods, so I was around car shows and the garage. All of them continue to teach me and have input on every project I tackle.
My wife and I have been married for 9 years and we have four kids. My oldest son is 7, I have twin boys that are 5, and my daughter just turned 2. On any given day, my life looks like a WWF Wrestling match and its usually the 2 y.o. standing on the top of the ring holding the title.
I was pretty much the first of my friends to start a family, and I find myself giving all of them advice, usually unsolicited. Not just about kids, but everyday stuff. I get asked if I "have a guy for that" almost daily, and I usually do. If I don't, I at least have a guy that knows a guy. If that doesn't work out, we put on our dad pants and grab the tools.
I promise this will be more than just product reviews, but dad toys are my favorite thing and I need to share them.
